For the past two years Harbor Child Care embarked on a journey to construct an enhanced playground for nearly 100 children served at its location in the RXR Plaza building in Uniondale, New York.
We chose a highly reputable company to construct and install 21st century state-of-the-art playground equipment for young children that included wall-to-wall synthetic green turf with padding, benches for teachers and children, a new structure for infants and toddlers and of course “Camp Walden”. Camp Walden is a corral of seven activity panels with options for each child to enjoy, regardless of their age or level of physical ability. It is the perfect retreat for kids!
What made this journey even more exciting was the installation of an outdoor classroom for teachers and children, designed and constructed by high school senior Corry Meyn. Corry chose to build an outdoor classroom learning environment for his Eagle Scout project.
Corry used the proceeds from his well-organized fundraising to purchase soil, grass seed, plants, flowers, shrubs, and student and teacher benches to comprise the outdoor classroom.
Harbor Child Care is regulated by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services. It is required that equipment be modern and meet safety standards according to New York State regulations for children. It is also necessary that children receive physical movement and exercise as part of Harbor’s new Creative Curriculum. This new playground helps our children play freely, enhance their social skills, and explore new possibilities for fun, games and imagination! Connecting the new playground to the curricular area of physical education/health is our main goal!
The completion of both projects and official opening came just a few days into the summer of 2019. Children and staff watched with excitement and anticipation at the beginning and end of installation.
Harbor Child Care truly appreciates the support of the Plaza’s Playground Committee, comprised of parents and staff, for their help with fundraisers that provided financial assistance towards the playground project.
