Mom teaching children

If your child isn’t following your directions, don’t despair. There is hope on the horizon. The gradual development of critical thinking skills helps kids navigate through school and life. Children get better at following instructions as their brains develop. Here are some tips to help you get through the early years.

Secrets to Following Directions

  1. Get your child’s attention. Be direct and ask them to listen to you. Use simple language to clearly state what you want them to do.
  2. Give one instruction at a time. Sharing too much information at once will cause confusion.
  3. Lead by example. Demonstrate a task and ask your child to repeat it.
  4. Allow your child time to process the instructions, one at a time.
  5. Get rid of distractions so your child can really listen.
  6. Use a calm tone of voice to portray your message.
  7. Give your child positive reinforcement.

Age-Appropriate Learning

  • Toddlers are usually able to follow one-step instructions. Attention spans are short at this stage. Be clear and make eye contact with your child.
  • Most children can understand and follow two-step instructions at the preschool level. Give them simple choices to make and offer encouragement.
