At Harbor Child Care, December feels like a time for discovery. The classrooms are full of small conversations about what happens at home. One child might talk about lighting candles, another about baking cookies, and someone else might share how their family gathers for a big meal. It’s joyful, a little noisy, and full of curiosity.
Our early learners notice everything. They are aware of colors, lights, smells, and sounds long before they understand what holidays mean. Teachers build on that curiosity, helping them explore the idea that families celebrate in many ways. It’s about understanding love, kindness, and gratitude, the values that show up no matter what the tradition looks like.
Learning Together
Every classroom has its own way of exploring the season. On some days, children read stories about Hanukkah and talk about the soft light of a menorah. During others, they may create festive crafts or sing familiar songs.
For children, learning about the holidays doesn’t have to incorporate a bulleted list of facts. It’s about noticing what these traditions have in common. Sharing, helping, and caring for others. Those are ideas even the youngest children can understand.

Early Learners Discovering New Perspectives
When we talk about Ramadan, early learners listen closely. They might not understand fasting, but they connect with the idea of patience and thinking about others. When we talk about the Winter Solstice, they notice the short days and how nice it feels to be warm and cozy. Moments like these help children build empathy and a sense of belonging.
Growing Through Shared Traditions
Every classroom looks a little different this time of year. There are books about holidays from all over the world, art projects that fill the walls, and excited voices asking questions. The learning doesn’t feel like a lesson. It happens naturally through play, stories, and active listening
As the season goes on, our early learners start connecting what they’ve seen and heard. They realize that while every family celebrates in its own way, the heart of it all is related. Love, connection, and gratitude. Watching those lessons take root reminds us why we do what we do. These small moments of discovery stay with children long after the holidays end.
At Harbor Child Care, every day gives us another chance to celebrate what makes each family special, and to teach children that every tradition deserves to be seen, shared, and valued.
