Parents helping their children with homework

Transitions are never easy for kids, especially when starting school or daycare. However, there are a few methods parents and teachers can use to help kids lessen fears of their new environment.

Parents Can Make Transitioning for Children Easier by:

  • If the school offers visiting days, set up a visit to introduce your child to their new environment.
  • Find out who will be their teacher. You may be also able to find out who will be in their class, that way you can set up play dates before school starts.
  • Acknowledge your child’s fear and remind them that it’s okay to feel afraid and nervous in a new environment, but as the days go on they will feel better each day.

Teachers Can Make Transitioning for Children Easier by:

  • Talk about the transition in a positive way and explain what is going to happen ahead of time so children know what to look forward to in the classroom.
  • Create social interaction by pairing children with a classmate or “buddy” to reduce feelings of loneliness. Encouraging group activities is another way that can help children form connections with others, making school feel like something to look forward to every day.
  • Write a story with students about their first day of school and have them express their feelings within the story.

At Harbor Child Care, our friendly staff makes children feel comfortable by giving them a safe and nurturing environment to play.
