Classroom safety tips

When choosing a preschool for your child, it’s important to not only consider cost, location, curriculum, and hours of operation but also consider the preschool’s safety environment. A well-organized classroom not only makes students feel more protected but also shows parents their children are being well cared for. The following are important to consider when choosing a preschool for your child.

Classroom safety tips

First-Aid Kits

While not all accidents can be prevented, the school can be prepared for such an instance. Therefore, the first aid kit should always be stocked and located in a place that is easy to get to in case of an injury. The kit should contain band-aids, antibacterial gel or foam, triple-antibiotic ointment, hydrocortisone cream, sterile gauze pads, adhesive tape, rubbing alcohol, cold packs, children’s Motrin or Tylenol, and a digital thermometer.

Emergency Plans

Emergency plans don’t do much good if preschoolers don’t know the drill. Kids should be walked through the whole experience – from the alarm to the moment it’s safe to go back inside.

Dangerous Supplies Are Out of Reach

It’s important that all sharp objects (scissors, bulletin board tacks) and poisonous materials (glue) are kept on a high shelf or locked away in a cabinet. When supplies like these are available during craft time, it’s always good for teachers to talk with students about how to properly use these tools.

Watch the Floors

When toys are not in use, floors should be kept of items so no one trips and falls. It’s also good to check for loose floorboards or tiles to prevent an unnecessary accident.

Important safety tips for the classroom

Hand Washing

Regular hand washing is a standard procedure for most classrooms, but it’s also one that many preschoolers haven’t entirely grasped yet. However, teachers and parents can set a good example by getting in the habit of washing their hands with their child. The proper way to hand wash is to be sure the water is warm and to get a good lather when applying the soap.

Sanitize Everything

Just like hand washing, cleanliness is key for keeping germs away. It’s important that teachers sanitize all toys, tables, chairs, and other surfaces at the end of each school day.

There is a difference between cleaning and sanitizing. Cleaning wipes get rid of dirt and debris, but sanitizing decreases the number of germs on a surface. Sanitizing on a day-to-day routine helps reduce the number of colds and illnesses kids are exposed to.

Keep Communication Flowing

A preschool that keeps an open line of communication between the preschoolers’ parents and the teachers is imperative. Keeping up-to-date on new guidelines, what’s happening on field trips, classroom policies and other emergency information will ensure your child is in a safe environment.

Child Harbor Care follows all safety measures to ensure your child’s well-being is in a protected environment.
