Swimming in a pool is a great way to spend time on a hot summer day. However, it can quickly become dangerous. According to a report from the CDC, drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death in the U.S. for children ages 1-4. Parents and caregivers who are supervising children must stay vigilant and prioritize water safety.
Here are some key water safety tips to remember the next time you head to a pool with the kids.

Swimming Safety Tips

  • Keep a constant eye on your children.
  • Swim in designated areas only.
  • Always swim with a buddy.
  • Pay constant attention to the children you are supervising.
  • Never leave a child unattended.
  • Keep an inexperienced swimmer within an arm’s reach.
  • Stay alert at public pools. Don’t assume someone else is watching your child.
  • Teach your kids how to swim. Enroll them in swim lessons.
  • Instruct kids to stay away from drains to avoid entrapments.
  • Water wings, swim rings, and inflatable toys meant for recreation are not safety devices.
  • Designate an adult ‘water watcher’.
  • Learn how to perform CPR. It can help save a life.
