Many parents know that dropping off their kids at school can be quite stressful. From tantrums to tears, it can make parents dread every day of the school year. However, there are some things parents can do to make drop-offs go more smoothly. Before you head out the door, prepare your child the night before and the morning of drop-off by talking about some of the exciting things they might do that day, such as painting or playing a sport. Remind them of the great people they will see at school, like their teachers and friends.

It’s helpful to keep child drop-offs consistent and routines predictable. Studies show that using a simple “goodbye ritual” can also make separations smoother. A goodbye ritual means repeating the same small action each time you leave. Children feel more secure when they know what to expect, and familiar routines can help them feel safe.
Examples of goodbye rituals:
- A quick high-five, hug, kiss, or special handshake
- Singing a favorite song together
- Saying the same phrase every time, such as “See you later, alligator”
- Drawing a small heart or smiley face on their hand so they can look at it during the day and think of you
Whatever ritual you choose, try to be consistent. Keep goodbyes short and calm, as longer farewells can sometimes increase anxiety. You may also want to practice the drop-off routine at home to help it feel more familiar. If your child is still having a hard time during morning drop-offs, communicating with teachers is important to help develop a joint plan. At Harbor Child Care, our staff is here to make drop-offs go as smoothly as possible.
