Summer is an ideal time to help preschoolers maintain their learning skills while exploring new interests. With the right activities, children can stay engaged, avoid boredom, and continue building important developmental skills.

Preventing Summer Learning Loss

Summer camps and preschool programs offer many benefits. Children learn to make new friends, build social skills, stay physically active, and follow daily routines. These early years are also critical for developing language, math, and problem-solving abilities.

Research shows that when learning stops during the summer, children may lose the equivalent of about a month of academic progress. Some studies also suggest that children can lose more than two months of math skills and experience a decline in reading ability. Continued learning during the summer helps prevent this “summer slide.”

Learning at Home

Parents and caregivers can also support learning through simple activities at home.

Vocabulary Building

Children can practice writing their names, learning the alphabet, and listening to stories read aloud. Reading together helps build vocabulary and listening skills.

Math Practice

Counting everyday objects, recognizing patterns, sorting items, and helping with simple measuring tasks are great ways to introduce early math skills.

Learning Habits

Encourage children to follow multi-step directions and complete small tasks. These habits help develop focus, persistence, and self-control.

Fun Summer Learning Ideas

Here are some valuable learning activities a preschooler can do at home with a parent or caregiver.

  • Create an outdoor scavenger hunt where children count rocks, find flowers, or look for insects.
  • Use water play to explore measuring and pouring.
  • Watch birds and animals to learn about nature.
  • Blow and count bubbles of different sizes.
  • Write in the sand
  • Play age-appropriate board games that support counting, strategy, and coordination.

Summer learning keeps young minds active and curious—helping preschoolers stay confident and ready for the school year ahead. Harbor Child Care offers programs that prepare children for life beyond academics. Contact us for more information.
